Juzaburo Tsutaya rose from the absolute bottom of society, born in the red light district of Edo (Tokyo) in the mid-18th century, with no money and no family connections, to become the biggest publisher in the country. He is known for being a major publisher of the famous Ukiyo-e school, the woodblock-based art that became wildly popular not only in Japan, but world-wide. His most famous publications included work by Sharaku, Utamaro, and the amazing Hokusai.
