The series takes place in the fictitious village of Ginderbos in the Kempen, as part of the equally fictitious pilgrimage town of Achterhout. One can describe farmer Jef as an old, ill-mannered man who wants to live his own life, preferably at others' expense. He is a real miser and tries to take advantage of everything. Jef is attached to his handpuppet Modest.
