A brilliant watchmaker and his nephew, an avant-garde surgeon, create Gabriel, a mechanical man of perfect beauty who must be wound like a clock. His creators graft onto him the brain of Benedict Masson, a hideous man unjustly condemned to death, and the automaton Gabriel/Benedict begins to hunt down the true culprits of the murders he was accused of, driven by his love for Christine, the watchmaker's charming daughter.
