The story takes place in the spring of 1955 in Japan, Shinko Aoki, a dreamy nine-year-old girl, who lives with her family in a small rural town. She spends her time imagining what the world was like 1,000 years ago, buffeted by familiar stories from her earliest childhood. One day, a new student from Tokyo, Kiiko Shimazu, shy and sensitive, adapts with difficulty to her new class. But very soon they will become friends and embark on the magical world of Suo de Ella.
